The creation of legendary architect Albert Frey in 1945, Villa Hermosa was faithfully restored to its post-modernism grandeur around 2002, after siting vacant for many years. Originally used as both hotel rooms and rental apartments, the complex was converted to luxury condominiums. Villa Hermosa had narrowly avoided the wrecking ball when it was purchased in 2001 by developers that hired award-winning architect James Cioffi to ensure the historic structure's restoration was true to Frey's original design. The fully restored Villa Hermosa is comprised of 21 distinctive units.
Villa Hermosa is located in the Old Las Palmas section of Palm Springs, near North Palm Canyon Drive and El Alameda. Albert Frey (1903-1998) was born in Zurich, and studied in Europe with LeCorbusier, a pioneer of architecture. Frey came to the United States in 1930, arriving in Palm Springs four years later. Considered the father of "desert modernism," Frey designed many structures in the area, including such landmarks as Palm Springs City Hall and the Aerial Tram Station, and his own residence perched on the side of the mountain overlooking Palm Springs, The Frey II House.
