Palm Springs Historic Home

Sitting next to each other in the Village Green on South Palm Canyon Drive near Arenas Road in Palm Springs are two of the oldest surviving structures in the area. The Cornelia White House was built in 1893 out of recycled railroad ties taken from the short-lived Palmdale Railroad. Cornelia B. White was a very early pioneer in Palm Springs, and she and her sister purchased this tiny home home from Dr. Welwood Murray in 1913. The McCallum Adobe, which is the oldest remaining building built in Palm Springs, was built in 1884. It has since been restored and moved to its current location. These 19th Century pioneer homes now serve as a home for the Palm Springs Historical Society. The Paul Kaplan Group can help you buy or sell your little house, old

Palm Springs Vacation Home

Many of our clients at the Paul Kaplan Group are looking for part-time residences that can also be used as vacation rentals. When you are not using the home for your own enjoyment, you can rent out the home to help cover your expenses and even make a profit. Some owners manage the rentals themselves and use vacation rental websites like VRBO and Airbnb, while others go with a local management company. The Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism put out a nice post encouraging visitors to book vacation rentals and explaining the advantages. See the post here. If you are looking for real estate in the Palm Springs area, please let us know.

The Welwood Murray Memorial Library was designed by architect John Porter Clark, and it opened in 1941 on the corner of South Palm Canyon Drive and East Tahquitz Canyon Way in Palm Springs. The library originally shared space with the Palm Springs Desert Museum (now known as Palm Springs Art Museum). The building was designated a Class 1 Historic Site by the Palm Springs City Council on October 3, 1984. Stop by the library to learn more about the history of Palm Springs and the architects that created this architectural mecca. The Paul Kaplan Group specializes in unique properties and real estate by notable architects.

I want you to know what Pho is!  At The Paul Kaplan Group, we start talking about where we are going to have lunch in Palm Springs, almost as soon as we turn on the lights every morning.

One of our favorite Palm Springs lunch spots,  is Pho 533 in Smoke Tree Village. (Equally delish for dinner too)  This week, in our #pkgLocal sweepstakes, you can win a gift certificate for $25 to Pho 533, generously donated by Chad Gardner, the new owner of our favorite spot for delicious Vietnamese food.

The Welwood Murray Cemetery is tucked in a corner near the O'Donnell Golf Club and Temple Isaiah at the west end of Chino Drive in Palm Springs. The cemetery is the final resting place of many Palm Springs pioneers including Charles & Virginia Farrell, and one of our favorite mid-century architects Albert Frey. We often drive by this little parcel while showing real estate in Vista Las Palmas and Old Las Palmas.

Albert Frey Grave

The cemetery was designated a Class 1 Historic Site by the Palm Springs City Council on February 6, 1985, and according to the plaque: The Welwood Cemetery was the first community cemetery for non-indian settlers in the Palm Springs area. When Welwood Erskine Murray, the son of pioneer hotel operator Welwood Murray, died in 1894, he was

In order to preserve historic sites within Palm Springs, the City of Palm Springs has a Historic Preservation ordinance designed to protect and preserve buildings and areas which reflect elements of the history and culture of Palm Springs. We at the Paul Kaplan Group not only sell historic real estate, we also are actively involved with the preservation of architecture in Palm Springs.  We encourage everyone to help protect the buildings that have made Palm Springs an architectural mecca.

We love how upscale the Uptown Design District has become, at The Paul Kaplan Group and The Mod Shack. But sometimes we miss the good old days when funky mid-century finds were actually “design(s)” within reach.
